boscobeans Posted July 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2020 (edited) Would you cruise if you had to wear one of these at certain times and in certain places?? I saw this on line and since my wife must wear a mask all day at work and I am out and about a few times a week and wear one as well I did a little research into which is better a mask or a shield ??? Some swear by one and some swear by the other ? But in most situations a shield, to me at least, give a great amount of protection, is easier to sanitize and although a bit like a transparent Darth Vader helmet doesn't affect breathing in the least.. I noticed a new type of face shield on line that looked interesting. It is made to fit on the brim of a baseball cap or sun visor. No band around your head with big letters telling people that it is a FACE SHIELD. On and off in an instant, If you want a drink, just lift it by the brim and place it back on when you had your drink. Easy to sanitize AND ACTUALLY ABOUT THE LEAST EXPENSIVE PPE OUT THERE.. HOWEVER, fitting it on the brim and keeping it adjusted was a problem but adjusting it and then applying a few beads from a hot glue gun and it is very stable, stays where it should even with repeated on and off cycles. It could be something offered by the cruise lines with each booking?? At about $2 a piece (on line price) RCCL could work a deal and make it part of their cruises with one attached to a Royal Caribbean hat or Visor... Just interested in what others think, my only opinion is that this is easy to use, easy to clean and might be a solution that's better than a mask if they become SOP on cruises at certain times... crazyfrazee Posted July 8, 2020 #4 Share Posted July 8, 2020 No, I wouldn't wear one. I wouldn't cruise until all those restrictions would be lifted.

zekekelso Posted July 8, 2020 #7 Share Posted July 8, 2020 Just me, but I have zero problem wearing a mask. A shield would drive me bonkers, but I suspect I’d eventually get used to it.

johnjen Posted July 8, 2020 #9 Share Posted July 8, 2020 No, I wouldn't wear a mask nor a face shield on a cruise vacation that I spent a lot of money for. If they go to measures like this they might as well kiss themselves into bankruptcy, because the majority of cruisers wouldn't go for that.
BND Posted July 8, 2020 #10 Share Posted July 8, 2020 Face shields protect the wearer's eyes. Otherwise, they aren't good for anything else. If you notice, hospital workers wear both a shield and mask as the mask works to prevent spread and shields do not as the shield doesn't sit close enough to the face. So, in reality, an ineffective idea. Shields are not intended to be worn alone.

Hmmmmm.... we just spent the 4th in Atlantic City where there is a 100% mask requirement, no smoking, no eating, no eating, no nothing that would require you to lift your mask. Thousands of people were more than happy to comply with mask and social distancing rules inside and outside on the boardwalk. The only place your could eat or drink indoors was inside your hotel room. Edited July 8, 2020 by BirdTravels
not-enough-cruising Posted July 8, 2020 #12 Share Posted July 8, 2020 (edited) A face shield alone is worthless against any airborne virus Edited July 8, 2020 by not-enough-cruising
taglovestocruise Posted July 8, 2020 #13 Share Posted July 8, 2020 This would keep you safe, guaranty social distancing, provide great conversation at the bars and it may be CDC approved. The only way to be completely safe would be to follow Elon Musk to Mars.. 1
Rare Tapi Posted July 8, 2020 #14 Share Posted July 8, 2020 On a related note, even if a passenger is wearing a face shield, airlines are requiring that they also wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose. Wouldn't be surprised if cruise lines have a similar requirement when they restart. So if you're planning on wearing a face mask INSTEAD of a face mask, you may not be allowed to do that. Amesh Adalja, M.D., a pandemic preparedness expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, says, “There's a lot of at least biological possibility to suspect that [shields] are definitely better than homemade face masks, and maybe even better than other types of masks as well, because they not only prevent you from spreading it … [and] because it also covers your eyes, it provides more protection to the mucus membranes of your face where you might be getting infected.” JAMA by Eli Perencevich, M.D., a professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and two of his colleagues pointed to such benefits of shields for infection prevention, and noted that “face shields appear to significantly reduce the amount of inhalation exposure to influenza virus, another droplet-spread respiratory virus. In a simulation study, face shields were shown to reduce immediate viral exposure by 96 percent when worn by a simulated health care worker within 18 inches of a cough.” In an April 19 tweet Perencevich wrote, “Biggest benefit of face shields would be inside crowded office situations where air exchanges aren't ideal." And the debate goes on.. LOL
Billy Baltic Posted July 8, 2020 #17 Share Posted July 8, 2020 I thought the question was going to be related to having to wear a tux on formal night 😉. Can we talk about stuff like that again? It nearly always spiralled down to the level of kids in a playground but I miss it. Tired of all the talk about ‘it’.

There is room for droplets to get up under the face mask as it sits far off the lower part of the face, mouth and nose. As I said, ever see a Dr or nurse, or dentist ever wearing just a shield? No, they wear both a shield and a mask.

And I absolutely would not cruise at all if only face shields were ok before a vaccine. There is a reason why you always see medical professionals pairing a face shield with a mask. There was a poll here a while ago and it held steady at 60% no go if masks are required. Add to that the people who won't go because: 1. Fear of virus 2. Fear of being on a quarantined ship 3. Financial distress due to the economy 4. Fear of air travel 5. Lack of ports 6. Who knows how many "social distancing" restrictions. I'm sure there are more. It all adds up to a severe lack of demand for cruising for quite some time. Cruise Critic is not a representative sample of the overall customer base. The people here ready to jump on a ship tomorrow are a small minority of cruise customers. As for the OP's shield - we would never go on a ship wearing something like that. Ever. Or anywhere else for that matter. These are sad times indeed. Edited July 8, 2020 by bouhunter
Diver2014 Posted July 8, 2020 #25 Share Posted July 8, 2020 I have a face shield and I love it. Has velcro straps around the head and a foam rubber band across the forehead. No hat required. Completely covers my face, nose and mouth. Masks are suffocating--can't stand them. I forget that I even have the face shield on. I sure as heck am NOT going to wear both a shield and a mask. I've had many people ask me where I got the face shield because they want one and are ready to burn their masks. Just sayin'
