Diamond Status Inherited By Our Daughter Who Then Gets Married

Oh that’s really interesting. On Princess, each person in the family has independent status of one another. I can see how Royal’s protocol would multiple the number of high status pax!

Wouldn't a simple fix be to handle legacy treatment on a cruise by cruise basis?  On sailings where spouse / children accompany  D member they receive D treatment,  otherwise they are treated according to their own earned status.  No permanent status upgrades.

 

If a child becomes D inherited from the parents, and then lives with someone who then becomes D automatically, are you saying that if that someone moves out they would get to keep D status? We paid dearly for this status, and shouldn’t be handed out so freely.

Personally I think if you don’t cruise with 2 years then the clock should be reset.... as the current situation is, they have created a monster.

It’s hard to tell if people are aggrieved because the diamond status is inheritable or because they feel it makes the DL overcrowded. Personally I think the thread overall highlights how little benefit there is to being diamond. We will be diamond on our next cruise but have already bought the drinks package and didn’t get a balcony discount because we are a family of five and always stay in ultra spacious cabins. Don’t see any other benefit worth talking about.

Celebrity introduced unlimited drinks in the bars during cocktail hour a few months ago... not just 3.  Of course their cocktail hour is only 2 hrs vs the 3 1/2 hrs that RCI give ...!

I’m pretty sure that the execs don’t see it as a monster but a hugely successful loyalty program that gets people coming back.

 

The only ones that see it as a monster are the ones complaining about no seats in the lounge.  Quite frankly Royal doesn’t give a **** about that.  They’ve added the 3 drinks anywhere to alleviate those concerns, at least from their perspective.

That makes a LOT of sense.

 

Sort of like the airlines.  If I travel with my SO, she can check in using the elite line.  Get into lounges.  And board early.

 

On her own, she only has her own status.

If you give someone something (e.g.: inherited Diamond status as a minor), then take it away, that's going to create ill will and 'push' young cruisers to other brands. 

 

1st Off, many 'legal' adults (18 years old) are still in high school, and/or 'functional children' (e.g.: economically dependent on parents, who likely paid for their cruise). Suddenly telling them after years of diamond lounge access they can't go isn't the way to get loyalty. 

 

My wife and I were 1 7-day cruise away from hitting Diamond level. Our little girl has been on 6 7-day cruises; she's whatever 42 points gets you (we're interior stateroom folks). The knowledge that we're advancing toward diamond level encourages me to keep booking Royal, despite the temptation to go sample NCL or Carnival's products. The idea we can set our daughter up as 'diamond for life' is that much more incentive. 

 

Absent the loyalty programs, there are enough similarities amongst lines many people 'line jump' back and forth as it is. Maintaining goodwill in the current loyalty program arrangement sounds like good business sense for Royal.

They do.  Once they turn 18 they can not inherit their patents level.  We were Platinum when our daughter turned 18, and she had the same points as her parents.  This past June, she made Diamond on her own point count.  Yes, her husband and two small boys are now Diamond with less points.  We made Diamond in 2005 and it took 14 more years for our daughter to make it on her own.  It would appear that you want 18 changed to a lower age.

Our daughter inherited Emerald status. She turned 18 and was one night away from Diamond. We were already diamond. Our thinking was that on her next cruise she would turn diamond. Didn’t happen. Called and was told she would retain Emerald status but would need to start over from zero and work her way up on her own.

She would only start over at zero if she had not gone on any cruises.

Reward your customers who are actually spending money with you today (not 10+ years ago).  

 

But in both the airline and hotel industry's you can earn lifetime status with enough time at the elite levels.  I call that Pinnacle.

I never mentioned an age in my post.  All I was saying is that a child should be able to have their parents level, but after they reach a certain age, I would think 21 or 22 when they are out of school, they should go back to the level that they actually earned. I don't think it's right that an adult is getting the same D+ discounts and perks as me , when they could have only had to sail on one cruise.  I realize there are lots of kids that have earned their level by sailing the number of nights required and they earned the right to keep their level.

I'm 41, and my wife is (late 30's.... that's as specific as i think i can get without getting in trouble) 

 

We're about to hit diamond plus.  We have been diamond for what seems like FOREVER, definitely the past 10 years.

 

We typically sail once a year, if then, because, yes, we work.

 

I get 2 weeks vacation,  1 week to cruise (or something else) and the rest i use to take more time off during the holidays.  

 

That's been the case my entire adult life.

 

We went in the diamond lounge for the first time ever on Vision of the seas THIS YEAR.

 

I went inside to have the concierge help me with a billing issue.  He was helpful and I popped in maybe  2-3 other times during the cruise for other little random things I could have him help me with rather than go to guest services.

 

During the day there was a lady in there knitting, and 1 guy reading, and another sleeping or it was empty.

 

It was silent.

 

Just wasn't for me.

 

I just have no interest in sitting in a quiet room.  If I'm going to read or sleep or if I knitted, I'll be on my balcony taking in the sea air or by the pool. 

 

Had the same conversation with a couple we met on board another ship.  They were,  in their 30's, in a suite and   they were diamond plus. I asked how was the suite lounge and despite it being day 5 of our 7 day cruise, they said they hadn't been in there yet.  Despite the fact they were diamond plus (earned themselves... took first cruise in college) they had never been in the lounges either.  We all laughed when we said neither had we.

 

I just don't think it has the same appeal to a different generation. 

 

I love my status!  We're super excited to hit Diamond plus next year.  Why? 

 

The freebies I get from RCI.  Not for the lounge.  

 

I love all the coupons and discounts and little extras.

 

I think the lounge is crowded because more people are sailing, i just don't see the 20 -somerthings who love thrill seeking and adventure flocking to that quiet room.

 

And once you're my age and have kids, you travel with your kids and many of us are not going to take them into the lounge. You're by the pool!   We also do early dinner, so it's get back from the island, quickly bathe kids and change and pray you get to dinner in time.   After, it's find 1 or 2  activities before you have to get the kids back to the room and begin bedtime routines.

 

 

When we do our kid-free cruise to the med --- maybe we'll try to pop in more -- but we'll probably have a drink package, and I again think i'd much rather be out where the action is.... 

 

Hit me up in a few years and maybe I will be complaining about all the people in the diamond lounge.  🙂

Rhapsody has a lovely DL at the back of the 'shall we dance' lounge. Great views, and easy to take your nibbles and drink into the main lounge if you want to escape the DL. The concierge, Alan (?) was amazing. Enjoyed the continental breakfast set up too a few morning's and great coffee
